2024 Teaching Artists

Roza Lay

Roza Lay is a distinguished Cambodian American fashion luminary, emerges from the vibrant artistic legacy of Phnom Penh's renowned "White Building" community. His journey commenced at the age of 6, inspired by revered legends, maestros, dancers, and gifted artisans who resided near his home. Guided by Master Thyda Nop of the Royal University of Fine Arts, his passion for design and dance flourished. Drawing deeply from cherished childhood memories, particularly influenced by the rich tradition of Cambodian dance, Roza's creations epitomize a seamless fusion of cultural homage and defiance against gender norms. Embracing his identity as a young queer individual, he champions fluidity as a courageous rejection of societal constraints, striving to cultivate unity and inclusivity through his artistry. Roza's fervent aspiration is to ignite the next generation of artists towards a world that celebrates diversity and fosters a spirit of inclusiveness.

Garrett Sour

Garrett Sour is a distinguished classical Cambodian dancer who began his training at six years old under the esteemed guidance of master teachers Neak Kru Sodanny Eir and Neak Kru Yousedy Peov, specializing in both male (Nearong) and female (Neang) roles. He currently serves as the co-artistic director, instructor, and principal dancer of Wattanak Dance Troupe, where he contributes his expertise and passion for classical Cambodian dance. In 2023, Garrett further honed his skills by training intensively with master teacher Neak Kru Sotheavy Khieu in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His extensive experience includes performing at numerous national events, such as with Angkor Dance Troupe and Urban Khmer Ballet in Massachusetts. Internationally, Garrett represented the USA at the 13th Gangneung International Junior Art Festival and the 26th Keochang International Festival of Theatre in South Korea in 2014. He also participated in the 45th annual Soorya Dance Festival across India in 2022 and performed at the Korzo Festival in The Hague, Netherlands, as part of the evening-length production "Fires of Varanasi" with Ragamala Dance Company in 2024.

Chummeng Soun

Chummeng Soun began to dance at age 11 with the Angkor Dance Troupe in Lowell, MA unaware that it would shape their future. A pivotal moment came when Neakru Phen Yom, a Khmer Rouge survivor, passed on foundational movement knowledge—knowledge not taught at the School of Fine Arts. This experience profoundly shaped Soun’s practice and connection to Cambodian Classical Dance. Born and raised in Cambodia, Soun navigates the intersection of multiple cultures, languages, and worldviews. As a pioneering Cambodian American dance practitioner, their focus is on creating arts programs for the Cambodian diaspora. Having grown up amidst cycles of fear, poverty, suffering, and generational trauma, Soun is deeply committed to cultural preservation and innovation for social change. As Program Director at Angkor Dance Troupe, Soun works to sustain practices that intertwine Cambodian Classical and Contemporary dance, renewing appreciation for the art form. Soun is the co-founder of Urban Khmer Ballet (UBK), one of Lowell’s most vertical dance troupes. Their work celebrates Reclaiming Imagination, embodies the evolving Cambodian identity and has been featured at music and art festivals and conferences. As a cross-disciplinary creator, Soun draws from interconnected understandings of humanity, history, nature, and folklore. Their holistic approach to developing new work in the performing arts has inspired many creative Khmae Americans to embrace social change.

Peter Veth

Peter Veth is an inspiring Cambodian American classical dance instructor and performer, with over 35 years of dedication to preserving and expanding the art form. As the former Assistant Artistic Director to Master Pousita Huy of the Angkor Dance Troupe, Peter has trained with masters of The Royal University of Fine Arts and had the honor of working with the late royal princess Bopha Devi in 2013 during the Season of Cambodia in NYC. His passion shines through in projects like The Mekhala Project, where he lovingly choreographed the sacred dance Robam Boung Soung, performed by Cambodian Americans in Lowell, MA. In addition to his dance work, Peter shares his deep spiritual gifts as a psychic medium, traveling and offering workshops that connect dance with mental health and spiritual awareness. His latest endeavors, 2022-24 Reclaiming Reamker through the US and a Cambodian apparition of Joan of Arc for Arrow Street Festival 2024 showcase his commitment to leading queer Cambodian American dance, inspiring the diaspora with creative, imaginative performances. Peter's work spans various artistic expressions—from performance art to fashion and visual arts—always with the belief that uplifting the BIPOC artistic community through the power of art can bring about meaningful social change.
